Life After Graduation: Meet Aubrey
We are about to celebrate the 2 year anniversary of our AfterCare program being open! This has been a critical space for our graduates to make a healthy transition back into society after the year-long residential program. They are required to hold a job or go to school, manage their finances, continue their relationship with their mentor, get plugged into a local church community, and the list goes on. Many of our graduates do not have a safe or healthy place to return to after the program, which is why this housing is critical for continued support. We interviewed one of our more recent graduates, Aubrey, who currently resides in the AfterCare program. Here is what she had to say:
Why did you choose the AfterCare program?
“I am from Omaha, NE and I knew going back to the area where my addiction started would not be beneficial for me in my recovery. If I wanted to truly change my life, I knew it would require changing everything, including the place I lived. Having this as an option after graduation has helped me get back on my feet and has been an incredible blessing!”
Describe your life before coming to ATCWW and after since graduation?
“My life had no purpose. I saw no reason to live which was the driving force of my addiction to drugs and toxic men. Since going through this program and healing the deep wounds in my life, I know that God has forgiven me! I was able to forgive myself and others, and it literally broke the chains off of my life. I am now able to walk in complete FREEDOM! I never knew life could be so beautiful and I am eternally grateful.”
What have you been up to since graduating back in October?
“I was accepted into the Medical Assistant program that Gundersen Health Systems offers and started that right after graduation. I recently passed my exam and am now a certified MA working in the Family Medicine department at the Onalaska clinic! I absolutely love my job. I am also a part of Bethany Church and have found community through their young adults group.”
Why is this program valuable to someone in early recovery?
“It is a great opportunity to have as you learn how to navigate the real world after an intensive year-long recovery program. Being in AfterCare has really helped ease my transition into the work force and living life sober. I have an amazing support system right on campus and the necessary accountability to keep me on the right track. Not sure where I would be without this option. I would encourage every graduate to do this program!”
